In the last three years, photos published in the magazine have been applied to a variety of products and media, exploring the multiple possibilites for images to live beyond the pages. TOILETPAPER images have been reviewed by weekly and art magazines worldwide and appeared in special issues of magazines such as Vice and Hunger. TOILETPAPER was also exhibited on the High Line Billboard in Chelsea, NYC in May, 2012. In the same year images taken from the first six issues have been published in an anthology, together with selected narrative texts, that was reviewed in The New York Times’ Top 10 Photo Books. In June 2013, TOILETPAPER images have featured on Palais de Tokyo’s front windows and a special edition of Libération.

Edited by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari (concept and images)
Published by Le Dictateur Press
Published in August 2012
No text
22,5 x 29 cm (softcover)
40 pages (18 color & 3 b/w ill.)

© Toilet Paper

The Skirt Chronicles was founded by Sarah de Mavaleix, Sofia Nebiolo and Haydée Touitou as a collaborative platform with the ambition of creating a community which celebrates diverse cultures and generations. These rules, however, inscribed nowhere, enact in a changing way the representation of the beauty in its dimensions certainly aesthetic but also cultural and social. Jeanne Damas is a so called successful « It girl-model-businesswoman » who embodies many modern facets of a feminine ideal. She enjoys a popularity whose global reach could never have been considered before the modern era of social networks. Besides, Jeanne Damas first built this image by posting pictures of her own life: her favorite objects, her way of dressing and putting on makeup—with clothes and cosmetics from her own brand.

The idea behind this series was to let Jeanne Damas re-play against a neutral background; to recreate gestures, postures, and to put back in scene elements and iconic tools that cement this public conception acclaimed by her fans and by the media. This is what ranks her as an “icon” in fashion. The result is a study, a kind of investigation or quest for proof into the representation of the body, an enigmatic puzzle of flesh, objects and tools, which in the manner of a « cadavre exquis » brings into play the expression of these aesthetic tacit rules. The latter borrow as much from the classical « contrapposto », the figures of “Odalisque”, of those of “femme fatale” in movies holding a cigarette, or as « Pop art » references, from the presentation of the body in a clothes e-shop than from poses while taking selfies.

By bringing together these images, Iconography by Vincent Ferrané (b. 1974, French) explains as much as it questions the elements of a popular representation of feminine beauty.

---

First edition of 1,000 copies

Published by Libraryman

Edited and designed by Tony Cederteg

Printed by Göteborgstryckeriet

978–91–88113–35–1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0085/4913/8498/products/Vincent_Ferrane_Iconography_XXV_Figures_of_Jeanne_Damas.jpg?v=1571403665
28-novembre-philippine-chaumont-agathe-zaerpour-things-people-wear-in-kenya
Philippine Chaumont & Agathe Zaerpour - Things people wear in Kenya

Kenya is a country with a young population, full of would-be consumers. Chaumont Zaerpour’s Things People Wear in Kenya is a photographic study of fashion as lived, worn, produced and consumed there. This business, which has emerged over the past three decades, works when used clothes are exported from Europe and sold, at low cost and in high volumes, to African buyers, ending up distributed through market stalls. The photographers consider these distinct trades on their travels between Nairobi, Mombasa, Lake Naivasha and the World Heritage Site of Lamu.

The different fashion economies intertwine in the book, which is above all informed by Kenyan voices – clothing designers and wearers alike who spoke to the authors about their perception of clothing today during their two research periods travelling around the country. Their testimonies and the stories behind the photographs illuminate how textile cultures have been formed and informed by actors both in and far beyond Kenya. The reading experience of the book, with the mass of images and their rhythm, is akin to working through the dizzying piles of clothes in a mitumba market. Fashion is of relevance to everyone, whatever their income, and intersects with equally pressing social, economic and religious concerns.

Chaumont Zaerpour are Agathe Zaerpour and Philippine Chaumont who operate in the field of experimental fashion photography and art direction. In addition to the foreword from Hoke, the book includes speculative fiction by journalist Geoff Manaugh and essays from Sam Grawe, the author of “Nike: Better Is Temporary.” The essays describe five major shifts design may undergo in the coming decades. To arrive at these shifts, Grawe interviewed more than a dozen of Nike’s most inspiring designers, scientists, engineers, researchers and leaders, yielding unprecedented insights into Nike’s creative process. The collective voices projected a future of design that evolves from product to platform, performance to promise, elite to everyone, sustainable to symbiotic, and static to sensorial.

This sense of promise and evolution propels readers forward as “No Finish Line” defines Nike’s culture of innovation through the lens of the athletes, designers and scientists at its cutting edge; celebrates design not as an outcome, but as an endless journey; and suggests we can shape a better future by simply daring to create it.

“No Finish Line” is designed by Zak Group with custom illustrations by Bráulio Amado and synthesized imagery by PWR.
