Le second livre, \u003ci\u003eGhost\u003c\/i\u003e , donne à voir une découverte survenue lors d'une recherche aléatoire à la Bibliothèque Publique d'Information au Centre Pompidou. Un ensemble de 25 reproductions de planches photographiques issues de la collection \"Les Vieux Hôtels de Paris\" édités entre 1910 et 1939 révèle un phénomène qui affirme et contredit à la fois la logique du document. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLe titre de la pièce est issu du vocabulaire bibliothécaire : \"fantôme\" est le nom de la planchette qui remplace un volume emprunté. The shapes of its bunkers match this symbolic dimension. Through his pictures, Alexandre Guirkinger wanted to share his fascination for this extraordinary relic whose modernity is already old. The chosen and photographed bunkers are those the shape, situation and contours give the picture something more than the material storing of a boundary : a kind of science fiction scenery, a trace of land art, a modernist architecture, a contemporary geoglyph.\u003cbr\u003eThe gap between the abundance of the relics of the line and the few contemporary representations of the latter offer an exciting playfield to question our relationship to landscape, to the boundary, to the limit. This is the starting point of Tritan Garcia’s short story.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLe terrier est un objet de fantasme car on n’en connaît généralement que la silhouette ou le seuil ; le reste est laissé à l’imagination. Sur un plan symbolique, il en va de même pour la ligne Maginot : tout le monde en a entendu parler mais peu sont capables de la décrire. Son nom résonne comme un réceptacle à fantasmes. Les formes de ses bunkers répondent à cette dimension symbolique. À travers ses images, Alexandre Guirkinger a voulu partager sa fascination pour cette extraordinaire relique d’une modernité déjà ancienne. Les bunkers choisis et photographiés sont ceux dont la forme, la situation ou la silhouette entraînent l’image vers autre chose que l’enregistrement matériel d’une frontière : une sorte de décor de science-fiction, une trace de land art, une architecture moderniste, un géoglyphe contemporain. L’écart entre l’abondance des reliques de la ligne et le peu de représentations contemporaines dont elle fait l’objet offre un terrain de jeu excitant pour interroger notre rapport au paysage, à la frontière, à la limite. Il a ouvert, depuis Tombeau pour cinq cent mille soldats (1967), jusqu’à Par la main dans les enfers (2016), un espace où les mots et les créatures - qu’il nomme des « figures » - sont l’objet d’une métamorphose correspondant à l’état d’instabilité de nos existences, artistique, politique, sexuelle, individuelle.\u003cbr\u003eFigure légendaire, salué dès ses seize ans par René Char, plus tard, par Michel Leiris (et Pablo Picasso), Jean Genet, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Philippe Sollers, impliqué dans les enjeux politiques et humains du temps, souvent dans les plus grands risques (Coma, 2006), il a, depuis la Guerre d’Algérie, imposé une vision du monde en toute liberté. Ses archives sont conservées à la Bibliothèque nationale de France.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  De Wilfredo Lam et Sam Francis à Patrice Chéreau et Jean-Luc Godard, son aventure n’a cessé d’inspirer la création artistique la plus ambitieuse. L’exposition « Pierre Guyotat, la matière de nos œuvres », organisée par le couturier Azzedine Alaïa dans son espace à but non-lucratif, la Galerie, en avril-mai 2016, mit en scène les relations d’artistes de toutes générations à la création du poète, Miquel Barceló, Juliette Blightman, Daniel Buren, Elijah Burgher, Michael Dean, Bernard Dufour, Cerith Wyn Evans, Paul McCarthy, Jean-Luc Moulène, Klaus Rinke, Eric Rondepierre, Christoph von Weyhe. À cette occasion, Pierre Guyotat lui-même présenta pour la première fois des dessins, révélant une pratique qu’il avait engagée dans son adolescence, en même temps que l’écriture. Longtemps demeurée secrète, cette pratique manifeste la double approche de l’auteur, qui hésita entre poésie et peinture. Ces œuvres dessinées présentent des visualisations possibles de créatures que Pierre Guyotat met en scène et en voix dans sa création poétique.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  Les dessins exposés dans « Mes figures ? » appartiennent à la création la plus récente de Pierre Guyotat, à l’été-automne 2017. In 1992, Lambert began an ongoing series of bibliophile books, printed in limited editions under the title\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eUne rêverie émanée de mes loisirs (Musings from my leisures)\u003c\/em\u003e. For these, artists are invited to conceive, alone or in collaboration with a writer, a book that completely follows their own imagination. The book is thus a work of art in itself, published in an edition of 150 copies. Until today, 27 books have been produced with artists such as Robert Barry, Christian Boltanski, Louise Bourgeois, Jenny Holzer, Rebecca Horn, On Kawara, Anselm Kiefer, Giuseppe Penone, with more projects in the works. Yvon Lambert will present the complete series at the exhibition, offering a rare opportunity to view at first hand the different approaches the artists have taken to the open format.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBook designer and publisher Hans Werner Holzwarth and Galerie Max Hetzler first worked together in 2000 on\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eInhaltsangabe \/ Summary of Contents\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eby Albert Oehlen, a book in which the artist combines grey paintings with colourful exhibition posters created on a computer and his own text. At the time, Holzwarth already had a long history of close collaborations with artists including Barbara Bloom, Bogomir Ecker, Roni Horn, Raimund Kummer, Ed Ruscha and Kiki Smith, and as an art director for the publisher Scalo, where he created titles with Richard Billingham (\u003cem\u003eRay’s a Laugh\u003c\/em\u003e), Larry Clark (\u003cem\u003ePerfect Childhood\u003c\/em\u003e), Robert Frank (\u003cem\u003eMoving Out\u003c\/em\u003e), Jim Goldberg (\u003cem\u003eRaised by Wolves\u003c\/em\u003e), Nan Goldin (\u003cem\u003eI’ll Be Your Mirror\u003c\/em\u003e), Boris Mikhailov (\u003cem\u003eUnfinished Dissertation\u003c\/em\u003e), Richard Prince (\u003cem\u003eAdult Comedy Action Drama\u003c\/em\u003e) and many others. His especially rewarding collaboration with Christopher Wool began with a publication for the Los Angeles MOCA in 1998, which focused on the artist’s own impressions of his work in black and white snapshots. In 2003, Holzwarth published Wool’s artist book\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eEast Broadway Breakdown\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eon his own imprint, following it with several others, up to a recent book of photographic layerings,\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eYard\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003efrom 2018. Another long-term collaboration started with Rebecca Horn’s book of poems and illustrations,\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eTailleur du Cœur\u003c\/em\u003e, in 1999. Since then Holzwarth has published a collector’s edition of Horn’s films, an artist book that combines the facsimile of a handwritten Martin Mosebach novel with Horn’s overpainted photographs, and much more. Hans Werner Holzwarth will present a selection of these titles, many of which are now regarded as classics in their genre.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 2017, the new shared project H2P I Hetzler Holzwarth Publications was inaugurated to produce special collector’s editions of specific artist books. Since 2008, Holzwarth has also been editing oversize monographs for the publisher Taschen, again collaborating closely with artists to produce special limited art editions that come with original artworks. Later in the decade, he opened a gallery in Paris, and by 1972 he decided to show the leading American artists of conceptual art, minimalism and land art, such as Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Brice Marden, Gordon Matta-Clark, On Kawara, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Ryman, Cy Twombly and Lawrence Weiner. He also presented European artists Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Christo, Giulio Paolini and Niele Toroni. In the late 1970s, he installed his Paris gallery in new spaces where, while remaining faithful to his early artists, he exhibited Jean-Michel Basquiat, Christian Boltanski, Mircea Cantor, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Loris Gréaud, Candida Höfer, Jenny Holzer, Anselm Kiefer, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, Roman Opalka, Andres Serrano and many others. In 2000, he opened the Collection Lambert in Avignon, a museum dedicated to his personal art collection of more than 650 works, later donated to the French state. In the early 2000s Lambert opened a bookstore offering a wide selection of art books, exhibition catalogues, rare books, original posters and works by artists, and in 2014 he closed his gallery to devote himself to the store and publishing books in collaboration with renowned and emerging artists. In October 2017, with his daughter Ève, he inaugurated the store’s new premises in the Marais in Paris, designed by Dominique Perrault. Ce souvenir est-il plus frappant que l’on soit sobre ou non ?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eEt qu’advient-il si on visite cette même ville la journée, les yeux grands ouverts, avec une attente exagérée et des moyens très limités, une ville comme Paris dont l’immuable beauté pourrait finir par nous écœurer à tout jamais.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e Et si un Anglais de passage, un artiste nommé Michael Dean, vous prend par la main avant de vous perdre, en vous proposant une nouvelle manière de percevoir une ville que vous pensiez si bien et si mal connaître ? Par le prisme de ses sculptures inclinées, intoxiquées par elles-mêmes, qui défient la gravité, on trébuche sur cette ville entre deux moments de clarté.  Entre deux monuments qui reconfirmeraient presque notre propre existence, alors même que l’on se sent pourtant si confus. Richard Pryor a dit : « que son plus grand pouvoir résidait dans un lampadaire », car c’était la seule chose à laquelle il pouvait se raccrocher quand il tombait dans l’excès. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eL’excès serait donc ce qui caractérise le mieux ce projet qui se déploie dans cinq lieux différents de la capitale à travers les œuvres de Michael Dean :\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eUn jardin public et privé, une espace d’art indépendant, une librairie et une église. Une constellation de lieux institutionnels ou intimes, intérieurs ou extérieurs, qui tous disent quelque chose d’une œuvre et de sa pratique. Un portrait de l’artiste en mots et en lieux, essayant de saisir l’essence même de ce travail qui oscille entre l’écriture et la sculpture, la typographie et la performance. La plupart de ces sculptures sont montrées à l’extérieur car elles sont conçues initialement dans le jardin qui jouxte l’atelier de l’artiste. C’est la première manifestation de cette envergure en France de Michael Dean, après avoir exposé dans les plus grandes institutions internationales ces dix dernières années.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMais c’est avant tout un parcours sentimental à travers les rues de Paris, qui commence par une exposition à Goswell Road, un espace d’art indépendant et une maison d’édition fondée par l’ami de jeunesse de l’artiste Anthony Stephinson et son épouse Coralie Ruiz. Deux étudiants qui firent leur première exposition ensemble dans la boutique de fleurs du père d’Anthony. Ce projet raconte des destinées parallèles- les deux hommes se sont perdus de vue pendant vingt ans- le magasin de fleurs de Newcastle devenu cet espace d’art à Paris dans le dixième arrondissement. Ils y évoquent en filigrane leurs origines communes, et les années au milieu qui leurs ont permis de développer leur pratique. La pierre angulaire de cette collaboration étant « Smittens for Smoticons » le nouveau livre de Michael Dean publié pour l’occasion par Goswell Road. Un chemin qui se termine dans le jardin privé de la commissaire d’exposition dans le dix-neuvième arrondissement, où l’on peut contempler, sur rendez-vous uniquement, où même de la rue, une sculpture accrochée fermement à un arbre, une demi-lune qui sourit de la taille d’un enfant de sept ans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eEntre ces deux points géographiques, il y a une intervention dans la librairie Yvon Lambert dans le Marais, où l’artiste présentera tous les livres qu’il a réalisé lui-même depuis ces débuts, dont certains introuvables, et une édition spécialement conçue pour ce projet. Une lecture ardente de Michael Dean avec son fils de son dernier livre « Love Dancing on Hate’s Grave » aura lieu le samedi 22 octobre à l’Eglise Saint-Eustache organisée en partenariat avec le festival Move du Centre Pompidou. Et enfin et surtout des sculptures installées dans le jardin des Tuileries, inspirées des muselets des bouteilles de champagne, formeront le trait d’union formel entre toutes ses parties. Le fantasme ultime de cet exercice serait de créer une cartographie totalement nouvelle, d’un Tendre intime et romanesque, mené par l’artiste et ses fans. Exploring the three-dimensional possibilities of language, Dean often ‘spells out’ his words through an alphabet of human-scale shapes, employing industrial and everyday materials such as concrete, steel, MDF, padlocks and dyed books of his writings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhile the transmutation of language is particularly important to Dean’s practice, his sculptures are not intended to be read as words, but rather to be identified as an element of language in their own form and imagined as a word or idea. A constellation of spaces, some private, some public, some indoor or outdoor, framing his work and practice. A portrait of the artist in many words and venues, trying to capture the essence of his oeuvres that oscillates between books and sculptures-making, typography and performances. Mostly outdoor works since Dean’s pieces are initially conceived in his studio’s yard. This is the artist first large-scale presence in France, after showing extensively in the most renowned institutions around the world.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e It’s a very sentimental journey in the streets of Paris that starts by an exhibition at Goswell Road artist-run-space founded by Michael Dean’s childhood friend from Newcastle, Anthony Stephinson and his wife Coralie Ruiz. Two teenagers who did their first exhibition together in the father’s flowers shop of one of them. This exhibition is about parallel paths, the flower shop in Newcastle becomes the son’s artist-run-space in Paris’ tenth district, it relates to their common background and roots, the twenty years in the middle where they lost track and developed their own practices. The heart of this collaboration is the new book of Michael Dean “Smittens for Smoticons” published by Goswell Road. A pathway that ends in the curator’s private garden in the nineteenth district, one sculpture - a smiley half-moon locked on a tree- the size of her son, just to be seen upon request.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn between these two geographical points, there is an intervention at Yvon Lambert bookstore in le Marais, where the artist will present all the artist books he made since his debut, some impossible to find, and an edition specially made for this project. A fiery reading of Michael Dean with his son of his last book “Love Dancing on Hate’s Grave” will take place on October 22\u003csup data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003end\u003c\/sup\u003e at Eglise Saint-Eustache organized in collaboration with Move Festival at Centre Pompidou.
