LAUNCH AND BOOK SIGNING
With the authors
Saturday, October 25 from 5pm to 9pm
Galerie Yvon Lambert - Bookshop
Paris, France
---

#artselfie opens with an incisive remark by Douglas Coupland, who warns us that ‘“Selfies are mirrors we can freeze. It was subsequently activated by New York based collective DIS, as an aggregated mode of art-tourism and documentation.

These selfies and their dialogue with art are an opportunity to revisit fundamental questions such as: if art is a mirror, what happens when we place ourselves between it and the camera? The traditional trajectory from photographer to subject via the camera has been subverted, and with it, the nature of images and our perception of them. The #artselfie makes every participant both protagonist and collaborator, consumer and producer.

Including an introduction by Douglas Coupland (author of Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture and ruthless observer of contemporary society) and a discussion between Simon Castets (director of the Swiss Institute in New York and co-founder of the 89+ project) and DIS, #artselfie allows us to experience how significant — and seductive — this viral phenomenon is.

Notes on Selfies de Douglas Coupland
Conversation entre DIS et Simon Castets

Ouvrage issu de la collection
FOLLOW ME, Collecting Images Today
Jean Boîte Éditions, Paris, 2014

Bilingue Français / English
128 pages
167 mm x 240 mm
260 illustrations couleur
Couverture cartonnée / Hardcover
Conception graphique : Groupe CCC - Maybe in this work he is revealing to us that most sought-after thing called balance.

Balance can be messy, though. Balance is vague. Balance, for many people, is doing whatever it takes to tip the scale back in the other direction after too much indulgence or lack of discretion. Balance is a green juice after too much tequila. Balance is a silent retreat after too much noise. It's a €400 skincare treatment that might finally undo all the sun you soaked up as a teen.

But what if balance is a state of peaceful equilibrium so achievable, so within reach, that we could get there by simply shifting the way we view the world around us? The new series presented therein has its origins in just one photography session held by Kooiker in Tokyo in 2015, as part of a brief residency on the invitation of G/P gallery. Kooiker shot about a dozen colour photographs of a professional model posing nearly naked. In a modest pin-up pose the anonymous woman is seen on her back, left arm raised toward her head in a curve, and shoulder pushing a set of Venetian blinds to the right, that is casting a striped shadow onto her body.
In the spring of 2016, an early part of the series was first shown under the title History X at tegenboschvanvreden gallery in Amsterdam. Kooiker had revised a few of the nearly identical images in Photoshop, freely altering layer after layer, often stretching the image beyond recognition while exploiting Photoshop’s complete colour spectrum. The large inkjet prints he made from his experiments conveyed a subtle painterly effect.
Expanding his series, Kooiker downsized the image to a square format, shifting the focus to the model’s bottom, while he kept labouring on and experimenting with this basic image in Photoshop. For Tokyo, Kooiker selected 106 from several hundreds of images. The book presents the widest array of possible variations on a theme. For viewers well-versed in twentieth-century art it is almost impossible not to be reminded of movements in art such as constructivism, cubism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism, and so on.
But Tokyo doesn’t show paintings. Instead, Kooiker pushed photography to its very outer limits. The resulting images might resemble the art of painting, but in the end it amounts to neither painting nor photography. Kooiker has travelled the dual track of image abstraction and obsessive repetition of a single digital cliché, thereby permitting himself ultimate freedom. It resulted in a high-spirited picture volume, devoid of any narrative editing, walking the line between art catalogue and artist’s book.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0085/4913/8498/products/25548-8bbc0f50b9724f708ac1a816e9d39376.jpg?v=1553687750
richard-mosse-incoming-book-signing
Richard Mosse - Incoming / Book signing
Signature du livre Incoming de Richard Mosse

mardi 9 mai

à partir de 18h

Book signing

May 9th from 6pm

Shot during walks driving, during his travels, always looking, noticing, then stopping when the light and circumstance synthesize for him. He doesn’t look for the spectacular or unusual, but rather for the preternatural union of light and circumstance. For this reason, they may seem mundane, but each is a statement about this union of light, time, and energy.

Interspersed are reflective paint puddles, which he poured at home, getting the light to work for him. Each is a study in “light, form, and texture” — to use E.H. Gombrich’s words from his essay on 15th century paintings north and south of the Alps.

In Loops, they are the creative investigations during this chronology. In Vladimir Nabokov’s Bend Sinister, the novel before writing Lolita, one of his tropes was a puddle, which his main character, Adam Krug, first notices gazing out a window, a recent widower. Puddles distort reflections in reverse, like a “bend sinister,” a heraldic shield with the band going from top left to bottom right instead of the reverse, a bend dexter. The puddle motif reappears as an inkblot, a footprint, an ink stain. Nabokov was a lucky sufferer of synesthesia, the crossing of one sensory modality into another, with words revealing different meanings. He played with language as sound and image, “caressing” details, as he called it, looking for the unnoticed, infusing his stories with undercurrents of his special intuition.

Anders Edström was first discovered by the fashion industry, and first by Martin Margiela, who changed the look of fashion by being unspectacular, for example, simply covering boots, jeans, and backpacks in white gesso. Like Margiela, Anders Edström has always avoided the transcendent, spectacular, or highly stylized in preference for unaffected naturalism, but also for an alternative enlightenment in his synesthetic photography. Pictures were made into prints, all 11X14 or 16X20 inches, then into boxes after a long series of exhibits. I started to make pictures commercially in high school. Most of these pictures were portraits of children printed as 16X20 inch black and white pictures, dry mounted, that I took in the backyards of these kids’ homes and then made contact sheets for proofs to show their parents. Some of the first, real, color pictures I made, in heated trays of chemicals, were when Vericolor II film was introduced by Kodak in the early 1970s. It was the same ‘speed’ as Tri-x and so could be used with the same camera settings as the b/w film. At first, I thought I would try to forget which film I had in the camera since the power of the pictures was not driven by the film in the camera. It was stimulated by a psychological interaction between meand what I saw as I walked along in the streets and alleys of Wilkes-Barre. The earliest pictures in this book are from those negatives.
