He received the grand prize in the student division of the Fuji Photo Contest in 1951 and enrolled in the Tokyo Junior College of Photography (present-day Tokyo Polytechnic University) the following year. In 1959 he cofounded the Vivo photographers’ collective, which continued until 1961. Major publications include Man and Woman (Camera Art-sha, 1961), Ordeal by Roses (Shueisha, 1963; new edition, 1984), and Kamaitachi (Gendai Shichosha, 1970; Seigensha, 2008, 2009); major honors, the 1960 Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer’s Award, the 1963 Japan Photo Critics Association Artist Award, and a 2010 recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit.
