rodrigue-de-ferluc-augure
Rodrigue de Ferluc - Augure

Augure is a visual exploration of news photography from the 1960s and 1970s, created using press cuttings from the leading news magazine of the era. The series juxtaposes commercial imagery with that of news reporting to prompt reflection on the dual nature of photographic practice and the influence of advertising on our collective imagination.

At a time when French television was still a state monopoly (it would remain so officially until 1982) and radio and the print media were the dominant forms of media, the weekly press came to be seen by many photojournalists as a mark of professional recognition, offering large-format, full-colour publications. The print press was nonetheless a godsend for advertisers, who saw this large format and the promise of striking reports as an ideal space for advertising.

By juxtaposing the often violent images of conflict with the no less confrontational images of consumerist society’s products and tenets, *Augure* revisits an ambiguous and crucial era for the future of photography: the notion of photographic objectivity is waning in favour of the recognition of the photographer-author, whilst the growing presence of advertising images is patiently moulding readers into future consumers. In this schizophrenic environment, accounts of major geopolitical events (decolonisation, the Vietnam War, May 1968, the Prague Spring, etc.) sit alongside advertisements for a Renault DS, an electric razor or a vacuum cleaner, and the faces of political leaders merge with those of film stars. The boundary between information and communication is blurring, and history is now being written based on events where it is difficult to say whether they belong to the realm of historical fact, promotional content or mere anecdote.

By reinterpreting the visual allure of a bygone era, Augure plays on visual amalgams to suggest that even today, history is less a matter of framing than of editing. A semiotic puzzle, the series can be read – in the manner of the Greek and Roman priests – as a game of interpreting signs and symbols extracted from the bowels of the press.

Author: Rodrigue de Ferluc
Design: Rodrigue de Ferluc

24 x 33 cm
168 pages
Full-colour offset printing
Munken Pure Rough 150 gsm paper
Typeface: Baste (Image Format) (Lift Type)

© RNVP

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0085/4913/8498/files/01_JPG_9a65cda9-95d7-4397-b776-76e0b0390e33.webp?v=1779894368
