Four Speakers’ Corners (For Twenty-Four Hours)

Pour la réalisation de la pièce, Four Speakers’ Corners, (I Will Make Bets I Can’t Lose / You Will Bet on Something You Can’t Lose / We Make Bets We Can’t Lose) (2014), j’ai choisi différents coins de rue dans plusieurs arrondissements de New York. Je m’y suis arrêté et j’ai répété à plusieurs reprises à voix haute des variations sur la phrase « je ferai des paris que je ne peux pas perdre ». Durant cette activité, j’ai été photographié. Plus tard, à Paris, j’ai utilisé les tirages que j’ai rephotographiés dans une cabine automatique en bougeant les photos de haut en bas devant l’appareil. J’ai utilisé la prise de vue automatique de la cabine pour ajouter une part de chance à la façon dont l’image apparaît sur la bande photographique.
Les « speakers’corners » mentionnés dans le titre de la pièce font référence aux « speakers’corner » à Londres, dont le plus fameux est situé au nord-est de Hyde Park. C'est un espace délimité en plein air où la harangue publique, le débat et la discussion sont autorisés. Ce coin de Hyde-Park abritait au XVIIIe siècle le gibet Tyburn pour les exécutions publiques.
L’installation Four Speakers’ Corners, I est ainsi constituée de quatre bandes photographiques encadrées et accrochées chacune à un mur différent d’une pièce. Une bande grise fixée au sol relie visuellement chaque cadre l’un à l’autre.
L’installation est présentée durant un peu plus de 24h aux heures d’ouverture du Yvon Lambert/Project Room, du mardi 7 juillet dans l’après-midi au mercredi 8 juillet en soirée.
La durée de l’exposition à Paris fait écho à la durée nécessaire à la « real-time activity » à New York. Les photographies scellent cette activité anonyme dans l’espace public et les visiteurs sont invités à vivre cette expérience ambiguë en passant d’une « station » à l’autre dans le lieu d’exposition.

For the production of this work titled Four Speakers’ Corners, I (I Will Make Bets I Can’t Lose / You Will Bet on Something You Can’t Lose / We Make Bets We Can’t Lose) (2014), I chose different street corners in various boroughs of New York City. I would stand there and very loudly repeat variations of one chosen sentence several times, the permuted sentence being ‚I will make bets that I can’t lose’. During the process I was photographed. Later, in Paris, I used the printed photographs to ‘re-photograph’ them in a photo booth by moving them up and down in front the camera. I used the mechanical recording rhythm of the booth camera to add an element of chance to the way the images would appear on the photo stripes.
The speakers’ corners that the title is mentioning refers to the Speakers’ Corner in London, the most known is the one at the Northeast corner in Hyde Park. It is an area where open-air public speaking, debate and discussion are allowed. The one in Hyde Park is located on the site where the Tyburn gallows were used for public executions in the eighteenth-century.
The installation of Four Speakers’ Corners, I consist of four individually framed photo-booth stripes, each mounted on a different wall of a room. A grey tape applied on the floor visually connects them.
The installation will be on view at the Yvon Lambert/Project Room exhibition space for twenty-four hours, from Tuesday, 7th of July in the afternoon till Wednesday, 8th of July in the evening.
The duration of the exhibition in Paris mirrors the production time of the ‘real-time activity’ in New York. The photographs silently seal an anonymous public act, and the visitors are invited to engage in this ambiguous experience by moving from one ‚station‘ to the next in the exhibition room.
