This book traces the history of feminist architecture, going back to the theories of several American thinkers who, as early as the 19th century, postulated that women's assumption of all domestic work was one of the fundamental causes of gender inequality. La Grande Révolution domestique (The Great Domestic Revolution) reveals the strategies that contributed to challenging the way we conceive of modern housing and cities, in order to help women achieve greater economic independence and social equality.

Dolores Hayden analyzes the utopian and pragmatic sources of the domestic reorganization programs proposed by certain feminists in the 19th century, and reveals the conflicts of class, race and gender they encountered. This history of an intellectual tradition little known in France offers a new interpretation of the history of feminism, housing and urbanism.

By evoking visionary initiatives such as housewives' cooperatives, houses without kitchens, daycare centers, shared kitchens and community dining rooms, Dolores Hayden shows how, even today, collective action can be a lever of liberation for women.
