Maï LUCAS is a photographer who works with the press and advertising. Since her debut in 1986, she has always sought to bring an artistic dimension to her work, which has enabled her to exhibit in galleries and museums around the world.
Maï LUCAS came of age with the emergence of the hip hop movement in France, a movement created by young people for young people.
As both an actress and a witness to this new wave, she developed her artistic vision in this unprecedented multicultural melting pot.
The photographs she took during this period crystallise the collective memory of this movement, whose precepts are "PEACE-LOVE-UNITY-AND HAVING FUN". As a first-generation Franco-Vietnamese, Maï LUCAS immediately identified with this movement and befriended young musicians, graffiti artists and dancers from all social and geographical backgrounds, who were the precursors of this new movement.
Paris became a social and cultural hotbed: the crossroads of the suburbs, where the street took centre stage. Everyone sought to shine through their attitude and talent.
A major contributor to the visual universe of French hip hop, Maï LUCAS's photographs are valuable records, traces of her identity within this movement.
Between introspection and testimony, the book offers an intimate insight into the origins of French hip hop.
Through 104 photos, Mai Lucas pays tribute to the temples of this movement: Ticaret, the wasteland of La Chapelle, Globo, Radio Nova.
We discover portraits of young rappers: MC Solaar, Booba, Joey Starr, Assassin, Stomy Bugsy, Doc Gyneco, Kery James, Alliance Ethnik, Oxmo Puccino...
DJs: Cut Killer, Dee Nasty, Fab. and graffiti artists such as Jonone, Bando, Mode2, Sign and Futura 2000.
Finally, Maï Lucas does not fail to represent the femininity of this movement with photos of B-Love, K-reen, Sté Strausz, the Ladies Night, choreographer Max Laure...
The preface to this book is written by Sylvia Jorif, editor-in-chief of Vogue France. It is followed by an interview with Mathieu Kassovitz, director of the legendary film "La Haine". This book is sure to move all rap fans and photography lovers.
