Since 2009, Hank Schmidt in der Beek has been continuing this series in collaboration with photographer Fabian Schubert, entitled “Und im Sommer tu ich malen” (And in summer, I paint).

Together, they travel around Europe to create these singular self-portraits, visiting iconic sites in art history, where masters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Gabriele Münter, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh have painted before him. But rather than reproducing the landscape in front of him, the artist hijacks the exercise by painting exclusively the motif of his own shirt.

In summer 2024, Hank Schmidt in der Beek and Fabian Schubert created a special edition at Viktoriapark, Kreuzberg, Berlin.

Hank Schmidt in der Beek, born 1979 in Munich, is an artist, poet and musician. He studied fine arts in Offenbach and Brussels. Winner of the MAK Schindler scholarship in 2007 and the Szpilman Award in 2009, he combines painting, poetry and collage, playing with popular culture and art history. His work combines comic-book characters with iconic works, offering a humorous take on modern art. Recent exhibitions include Kunstverein Braunschweig (2021) and Galerie Christine Mayer in Munich (2020). A member of the “Das Lunsentrio” group with Nick McCarthy and Sebastian Kellig, he lives and works in Berlin.

Fabian Schubert is a Berlin-based photographer.
