The artists featured in this exhibition explore, each in their own way, the notion of space, emptiness, and silence.
In Japanese, the term “Ma (間)” evokes space, duration, and distance.
It is the art of almost nothing, of just enough — a way of giving emptiness, time, and absence a density that is both poetic and sensitive.
The appeal we might feel for an exotic Japanese term does not make us forget that art, design, architecture, urban planning, or poetry are equally shaped by the importance of emptiness, space, and pause — and this is not only true in Japan.
This is why we subtitle the exhibition “entre les lignes” (Between the Lines), focusing on artists and creators who explore the distance between representation and word, image and its interpretation.
