Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Jacques Roubaud

French artist and filmmaker Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster collaborated on this volume with a French poet and mathematician Jacques Roubaud (1932–2024).

Designed as a palindrome, this slipcased leporello documents a walk taken in London on October 14, 2012, following a strict mathematical protocol. The route was dictated by a 31-step sub-sequence of the Kolakoski sequence: the number 1 indicates a left turn at the first intersection, and 2 a right turn.

The first part (Allant [Going]) captures the 31 stations of this journey, each double page pairing a photograph by the artist with an echoing poem.

The second part (Revenant [Returning]), printed on the reverse side of the leporello, documents the exact reverse journey with an equal number of new photographs and poems.

Printing was executed by Art & Caractère in Lavaur, screen-printing by Imprimerie du Marais in Paris, binding and housing in a slipcase by Reliure d’Art du Centre in Limoges, and image processing and production management by Droit à l’Image in Le Bono.
