Photographer Julie Glassberg documents the misunderstood alternative culture based around brightly-coloured and neon-lit decorated trucks in Japan.
At first glance, it's a spectacle of vibrant colors and dazzlingly bright lights on extravagantly decorated trucks. Dekotora, short for "deko torakku" (i.e. decorated truck) is written off by mainstream Japanese society due to its association with "bad boys". But beneath the flashy surface lies a world shrouded in mystery and poetry.
Dekotora first caught on in the late 1960s as a form of mobile advertising: a truck carrying fish from Hokkaido, for example, would sport a traditional painting showing its cargo and where it was from. Today, due to regulations prohibiting this form of decoration because of the disrepute of the Dekotora scene, these trucks are used only by a few small businesses, such as fish and flower delivery services.
Although to all appearances a relatively exclusive community, its members frequently host public events where they proudly show off their creations on wheels. Often, these gatherings are fundraisers for charitable causes, such as aiding victims of the 2011 earthquake, many of whom are still suffering from its consequences.
In a conversation with Japanese pop culture expert Kyoichi Tsuzuki, I gained a deeper understanding of Dekotora's cultural significance. Beyond its flashy exterior, Dekotora reflects a traditional Japanese aesthetic: like Japan's ornate hearses, tombs, temples and the sacred mikoshi palanquins used in Shinto festivals, it mirrors a penchant for elaborate decoration that is deeply ingrained in Japan's suburban and rural communities. It's a cultural echo of the past, of childhood memories that are rekindled by the sight of these garish juggernauts on the nation's highways and in iconic movies.
Julie Glassberg (born 1984) is a French photographer based in Paris. After studying graphic design, she moved to New York to dedicate herself fully to her passion, photography. Her work explores cultural diversity, subcultures, underground scenes, and individuals living on the margins of society.
For seven years, she collaborated regularly with The New York Times and, from 2011 to 2015, created the portraits for the weekly column Character Study alongside journalist Corey Kilgannon. Her photographs have also appeared in publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Le Monde, The Wall Street Journal, El País Semanal, Stern View, L'Équipe Magazine, ESPN, among others. She later spent a year in Japan developing new projects and collaborations with local artists, followed by a six-month residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai.
Her work has received several awards and grants, including the Lucie Scholarship Emerging Grant, the Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography, a POYi Award of Excellence, and an International Photography Award.

Our photo prints and t-shirts are produced on-demand. Please allow 2-3 weeks for production before these items are shipped. - In-Stock Items (All Other Products)
All other orders are processed and prepared for shipment within 1-2 business days. - Order Notifications
You will receive a confirmation email immediately after your purchase. A second email with tracking information will be sent as soon as your order has shipped. - Restocking
Occasionally, some item may be in the process of restocking. If this causes a delay in preparing your order, we will contact you directly by email to inform you.
2. Shipping & Delivery
- Packaging
We pack every order with care to ensure it arrives safely. Posters and prints are rolled and placed in a sturdy cardboard tube, which is then secured in a shipping box.
Important Note on Combined Orders:
Please be aware that certain items, like books and posters, cannot be safely packed together due to their different shapes and sizes. As a result, an order containing multiple item types may be shipped in separate packages and incur separate shipping fees. - Shipping Rates & Carriers
We ship worldwide from Paris via La Poste (France's national postal service), using their Colissimo, Priority Mail services with the exception of certain products shipped via UPS. Shipping costs are automatically calculated at checkout based on the weight, volume, and destination of your package. If you require a different carrier (e.g., UPS, FedEx, DHL), please contact us before placing your order to arrange it. - Estimated Transit Times
Once your order has shipped, the estimated delivery times are as follows:

3. Free In-Store Pickup (Paris)
You can skip the shipping fees with our free local pickup service at our bookshop in Paris.
- How it Works:
Simply select the "Pick up" option at checkout.

If you are ordering from outside of France but wish to collect your order at our bookshop in Paris, please select "France" as the delivery country first. The "Pick up" option will then become available. If the location still does not appear, you can click on "Search elsewhere" and enter the postcode 75003. - Preparation Time:
In-stock items will be ready for pickup within 24 hours (Tuesday-Saturday). This does not apply to made-to-order items like art prints and t-shirts. - Notification:

Return Policy
- 14 to 30-Day Returns: You have 14 clear days from delivery to notify us of your return if you reside within the European Union, and 30 days for orders delivered outside the European Union.
- Item Condition: Items must be returned intact, new, and securely packaged in their original condition to be eligible for a refund.
- Contact Us First: Before sending an item back, you must email us at shop@yvon-lambert.com to notify us of your decision and receive return instructions.
- Shipping Costs: Return shipping costs are your sole responsibility.
- Damaged Items: If your order arrives damaged, please send us photographs of both the package and the item by email as soon as possible (within 48 to 72 hours). If the package is visibly damaged upon delivery, you may refuse it directly with the carrier.
- International Returns (Non EU): To prevent customs charges upon arrival in France, you must clearly mark "RETURNED GOODS" on the customs declaration form (CN22/CN23) as well as on the outside of the package.
- Refunds: Once your return is received and inspected at our store, your refund will be processed within 14 days using your original payment method.
- Non-refundable Items: Magazines and custom or made-to-order items are non-refundable.
