“People are really very afraid that this country will be overrun by people from a different culture,” Margaret Thatcher declared in 1978. Nearly ten years later, Paul Gilroy offered a very different perspective. British culture already belongs to the children of immigrants, and its music is inseparable from a diasporic and cosmopolitan counter-culture linking Europe, America and Africa, which he called the Black Atlantic. From the cult of early soul-funk imports to sound systems and the early days of ‘UK’ rap, Black Britons have been part of an anti-colonial resistance so powerful that some white artists and audiences project their own desires for dissent onto it or appropriate their styles. Avoiding both the essentialisation of identities and their denial, Paul Gilroy describes how Black artists reinvent their origins and escape domestication by the market. And in the face of the violence of racism, he affirms the utopian scope of Afro-diasporic music, far beyond the boundaries of the nation-state.

The author:
Paul Gilroy is an English sociologist and the author of several renowned works, including *Ain’t No Black in the Union Jack* (1987), from which this book is adapted, *The Black Atlantic* (1993) and *Postcolonial Melancholy* (2006). He was part of the Cultural Studies movement alongside Stuart Hall. His work has transformed the study of diasporas and the politics of race.
Foreword:
David Bola is a French freelance journalist specialising in popular music. He works with the media outlet Grünt and writes articles for Musique Journal and Tsugi, having previously worked for several years at Radio Nova.
Translation:
Maboula Soumahoro is a senior lecturer in American civilisation at the University of Tours, specialising in US, African-American and Black/African diaspora studies in the Atlantic world. She is notably the author of the autobiographical essay Le Triangle et l’Hexagone. Reflections on a Black Identity (2020) and the translator of Saidiya Hartman’s classic, In Search of a Mother: On the Atlantic Routes of Slavery (2023).

2. Shipping & Delivery
- Packaging
We pack every order with care to ensure it arrives safely. Posters and prints are rolled and placed in a sturdy cardboard tube, which is then secured in a shipping box.
Important Note on Combined Orders:
Please be aware that certain items, like books and posters, cannot be safely packed together due to their different shapes and sizes. As a result, an order containing multiple item types may be shipped in separate packages and incur separate shipping fees. - Shipping Rates & Carriers
We ship worldwide from Paris via La Poste (France's national postal service), using their Colissimo, Priority Mail services with the exception of certain products shipped via UPS. Shipping costs are automatically calculated at checkout based on the weight, volume, and destination of your package. If you require a different carrier (e.g., UPS, FedEx, DHL), please contact us before placing your order to arrange it. - Estimated Transit Times
Once your order has shipped, the estimated delivery times are as follows:

3. Free In-Store Pickup (Paris)
You can skip the shipping fees with our free local pickup service at our bookshop in Paris.
- How it Works:
Simply select the "Pick up" option at checkout.

If you are ordering from outside of France but wish to collect your order at our bookshop in Paris, please select "France" as the delivery country first. The "Pick up" option will then become available. If the location still does not appear, you can click on "Search elsewhere" and enter the postcode 75003. - Preparation Time:
In-stock items will be ready for pickup within 24 hours (Tuesday-Saturday). This does not apply to made-to-order items like art prints and t-shirts. - Notification:

Return Policy
- 14 to 30-Day Returns: You have 14 clear days from delivery to notify us of your return if you reside within the European Union, and 30 days for orders delivered outside the European Union.
- Item Condition: Items must be returned intact, new, and securely packaged in their original condition to be eligible for a refund.
- Contact Us First: Before sending an item back, you must email us at shop@yvon-lambert.com to notify us of your decision and receive return instructions.
- Shipping Costs: Return shipping costs are your sole responsibility.
- Damaged Items: If your order arrives damaged, please send us photographs of both the package and the item by email as soon as possible (within 48 to 72 hours). If the package is visibly damaged upon delivery, you may refuse it directly with the carrier.
- International Returns (Non EU): To prevent customs charges upon arrival in France, you must clearly mark "RETURNED GOODS" on the customs declaration form (CN22/CN23) as well as on the outside of the package.
- Refunds: Once your return is received and inspected at our store, your refund will be processed within 14 days using your original payment method.
