The fifth issue of the annual magazine that promotes know-how and technique in design, craft or industry looks at the act of blowing: an issue about breath, wind, lungs, pneumatics, instruments, birds, balloons, crystal, bouncy castles, and all kinds of other things that come to life with air.
We admit it: we chose this theme in part because it makes us laugh. In French, souffler (to blow), gonfler (to inflate), and faire du vent (to talk a lot while saying nothing; literally, "to blow wind") are relatively innocent. In English, "to blow" can be much more ambiguous. All the better. We like words that can't be contained by their own definitions. And "to blow" can also mean to fail at something; "to blow up" can mean to explode, or to do away with assumptions and start over; and of course, you can "blow someone's mind." This is a great way to sum up what we try to do in every issue: start with a simple word and see how far it can take us. This time, we go where the wind blows.
As we were putting this issue together, we realized that air is everywhere, and we almost never think about it. Yet it's where everything starts. Air enters and leaves our bodies thousands of times a day. It fills our lungs, makes our vocal cords vibrate, and carries sounds, smells, pollen, smoke, and sometimes even ideas. We wanted to take a closer look at the invisible mechanism that keeps us alive.
Throughout these pages, we often come back to the breath. The breath that flows through our respiratory systems, that we hold, and that we sometimes can't get enough of. That, too, on which our shared future depends. Because we only need to look around to realize that breathing could become much more difficult. Between pollution, global warming, ever more energy-intensive infrastructures, and the generalized anxieties of our times, the question of air has become as political as it is personal. Inhaling and exhaling have never felt both as natural and as fragile as they do right now.
But air isn't just what we breathe. It's also an incredible technical material. We observe as it's compressed, stored, and contained in canisters, tires, and machines. As it becomes a force capable of digging tunnels, moving vehicles, powering tools, and transporting energy. It's a hidden yet essential story, an invisible thread running through the history of industrialization.
We watch, too, as it becomes objects to play with. From blown-up balloons transformed into improbable objects to enormous bouncy structures manufactured by C2J, air can become temporary architecture, a playground for adventure, or a device for making childhood memories.
We look, too, at how air becomes culture. Air brings music to life when it passes through an alphorn, a serpent, or an ocarina.
Air allows two bird callers to converse with other life forms through whistles and controlled breathing. In this case, breath doesn't just produce a sound: it becomes a language shared across species.
Air fills sails, carries kites, sets imaginations soaring, and sends all kinds of projects in unexpected directions.
Finally, there's the air we try to capture—like that which crystal glassblowers trap in a molten bubble before giving it a lasting shape. Artisans today still practice this two-thousand-year-old craft, transforming momentary breath into objects.
This approach is also found in some design projects, where air becomes a raw material and gives shape to inflatable furniture.
As with glassmaking, it all begins with a void we decide to fill. As we were wrapping up this issue, we realized that "to blow" is really about élan—about momentum and enthusiasm. About what circulates, is transmitted, and spreads. And sometimes, about the times we try a little too hard… When we run the risk that everything will blow up in our faces, but we go for it anyway. And that's fine by us. So, here's an issue about breath, wind, lungs, pneumatics, instruments, birds, balloons, crystal, bouncy castles, and all kinds of other things that come to life with air.
Tools magazine is the brainchild of Clémentine Berry, who also founded the Twice art direction studio in Paris. This annual publication aims to simultaneously promote and investigate the details of manufacturing techniques and expertise used in art, design, interior architecture, industry and trade. Each issue focuses on a particular technique (moulding, folding, etc.), and the theme is used to select feature subjects and pieces, as well as the persons interviewed. Tools is crafted as a comprehensive inventory of design techniques. Weaving together past and present, it draws on history to illustrate how techniques have been handed down through the ages, paying homage to the creators behind the cult objects we use in our everyday lives, and whose work embodies the stories that lie at the very genesis of our shared human ingenuity.
