Theory and Against Translation
Against Translation est un texte inédit de Kenneth Goldsmith, proposé ici en huit langues, dans huit livres rassemblés dans un coffret – anglais, français, espagnol, allemand, chinois, japonais, russe et arabe.
L’auteur y évoque les impasses et les insuffisances de la traduction, cette « approximation du discours qui produit un nouveau discours » et lui oppose la notion de déplacement, un phénomène né de la mondialisation : si les gens et les objets sont déplacés, ainsi en va-t-il du langage. En prenant pour exemple l’influence de la publicité, la circulation de l’in- formation ou encore les effets de la mise en réseau, Kenneth Goldsmith montre l’obsolescence de l’acte de traduction et propose une reflexion sur l’idée de déplacement. Cette nouvelle réalité qui tend à imposer sa norme, bouleverse les structures linguistiques, sociales et politiques et modi e profondément nos pratiques culturelles.
Après Theory – un ensemble de 500 textes publiés sous la forme d’une ramette de papier – Against Translation est le deuxième livre de Kenneth Goldsmith publié par Jean Boîte Éditions.
Against Translation is an unreleased essay by Kenneth Goldsmith. Jean Boîte Éditions publishes it here in eight languages, in eight books gathered in a boxcase – English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Arabic.
The author discusses the impasses and shortcomings of translation, this “approximation of discourse that produces a new discourse” and he opposes the notion of displacement, a phenomenon born of globalization: if people and objects are moved, so it will for language. Using the example of the influence of advertising, information ow and the effects of networking, Kenneth Goldsmith shows the obsolescence of the act of translation and reflects on the idea of movement. Movement is the new reality which tends to impose its standard upsets linguistic structures, social and political worlds, and profoundly changes our cultural practices.
Following Theory – a sum of 500 texts printed and assembled in the form of a ream of paper –, Against Translation is the second book of Kenneth Goldsmith published by Jean Boite Éditions.

We process orders from Tuesday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
- Made-to-Order Items (Photo prints & T-Shirts)
Our photo prints and t-shirts are produced on-demand. Please allow 2-3 weeks for production before these items are shipped. - In-Stock Items (All Other Products)
All other orders are processed and prepared for shipment within 1-2 business days. - Order Notifications
You will receive a confirmation email immediately after your purchase. A second email with tracking information will be sent as soon as your order has shipped. - Restocking
Occasionally, some item may be in the process of restocking. If this causes a delay in preparing your order, we will contact you directly by email to inform you.
2. Shipping & Delivery
- Packaging
We pack every order with care to ensure it arrives safely. Posters and prints are rolled and placed in a sturdy cardboard tube, which is then secured in a shipping box.
Important Note on Combined Orders:
Please be aware that certain items, like books and posters, cannot be safely packed together due to their different shapes and sizes. As a result, an order containing multiple item types may be shipped in separate packages and incur separate shipping fees. - Shipping Rates & Carriers
We ship worldwide from Paris via La Poste (France's national postal service), using their Colissimo, Priority Mail services. Shipping costs are automatically calculated at checkout based on the weight, volume, and destination of your package. If you require a different carrier (e.g., UPS, FedEx, DHL), please contact us before placing your order to arrange it. - Estimated Transit Times
Once your order has shipped, the estimated delivery times are as follows:

3. Free In-Store Pickup (Paris)
You can skip the shipping fees with our free local pickup service at our bookshop in Paris.
- How it Works:
Simply select the "Pick up" option at checkout.
* The "Pick up" option is displayed based on your location. If you are ordering from outside of France but wish to collect your order at our bookshop in Paris, please select "France" as the delivery country first. The "Pick up" option will then become available. If the location still does not appear, you can click on "Search elsewhere" and enter the postcode 75003. - Preparation Time:
In-stock items will be ready for pickup within 24 hours (Tuesday-Saturday). This does not apply to made-to-order items like art prints and t-shirts. - Notification:
We will send you an email as soon as your order is ready for collection, along with instructions. - Pickup Hours:

Return Policy
- 14 to 30-Day Returns: You have 14 clear days from delivery to notify us of your return if you reside within the European Union, and 30 days for orders delivered outside the European Union.
- Item Condition: Items must be returned intact, new, and securely packaged in their original condition to be eligible for a refund.
- Contact Us First: Before sending an item back, you must email us at shop@yvon-lambert.com to notify us of your decision and receive return instructions.
- Shipping Costs: Return shipping costs are your sole responsibility.
- Damaged Items: If your order arrives damaged, please send us photographs of both the package and the item by email as soon as possible (within 48 to 72 hours). If the package is visibly damaged upon delivery, you may refuse it directly with the carrier.
- International Returns (Non EU): To prevent customs charges upon arrival in France, you must clearly mark "RETURNED GOODS" on the customs declaration form (CN22/CN23) as well as on the outside of the package.
- Refunds: Once your return is received and inspected at our store, your refund will be processed within 14 days using your original payment method.
- Non-refundable Items: Magazines and custom or made-to-order items are non-refundable.
