Pierre Guyotat - Mes figures

Pierre Guyotat
Mes figures ?

"Mes figures ?"
March 9th - April 9th 2018

Yvon Lambert and Eve Lambert are pleased to present "Mes figures ?", the first exhibition devoted exclusively to Pierre Guyotat' drawings, opening on march 9th at Yvon Lambert new space in Paris.

Born in Bourg-Argental in 1940, Pierre Guyotat is one of France’s most appreciated and renowned writers. In his, often controversial, writings he questions the instability of our artistic, political, sexual, individual existences. He has, since his experiences in the Algerian War, imposed a vision of the world in complete freedom. His archives are kept at the National Library of France.

Acclaimed from a very young age by great thinkers and writers of the 20th century, like René Char, Michel Leiris (and Pablo Picasso), Jean Genet, Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault, Pierre Guyotat’s work forms an ongoing inspiration for contemporary artistic creation.
The exhibition Pierre Guyotat, la matière de nos œuvres, organized by fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa in 2016, illustrated Guyotat’s continuous influence by showcasing the relationships of artists from all generations to the work of the poet. Contributions included works by Miquel Barceló, Juliette Blightman, Daniel Buren, Elijah Burgher, Michael Dean, Bernard Dufour, Cerith Wyn Evans, Paul McCarthy, Jean-Luc Moulene, Klaus Rinke, Eric Rondepierre and Christoph von Weyhe. At this occasion Pierre Guyotat' drawings were presented for the first time, revealing a practice he began in his teenage years, at the same time as he started writing. Long kept secret, this discipline shows the dual approach of the author, whose work balances between poetry and painting.

The drawings present possible visualizations of creatures that Pierre Guyotat stage in his poetic creation. As he himself says : « I do not want to "figure" (represent). I want to remain between the sketch and the final result, between the symbol and the representation. This is the object of very long lasting and again distressing reflections, taking to account that this type of construction – the drawing – provokes a remake of some inner and hand movements that I used to live during my childhood and adolescence, prior to the death of my mother, alongside whom I probable learned to draw ».
